We talked about them a few months ago. Their names are Adriana Falcón and Miguel Bastida, and, being Mexican, they create their own unique sound from the bright city of Hong Kong. Under the name of Deer They've toured all over the Far East and Europe, but have never had the chance to play on our continent, not even in their home country. However, curiosity about their music has grown exponentially here, especially after the release of their EP in 2018. Portraits, a work of four themes that, in the multiple reviews made by the specialized press around the world, has been described as a small masterpiece. Well, now, after attending festivals in Denmark, the Netherlands, Thailand, China, and other places so unusual for any Latin American musical project, they are releasing their first album, with the suggestive name of There's no future.
This album, with eight songs and a duration of just 35 minutes, It is a powerful machine of dark tones ready to occupy, like a relentless industrial army, every pore of our ears.. There's no future It's the sum of chaotic digital violence with an unusual sensuality that lurks in the most unexpected places. At times it has threads inherited from Nine Inch Nails' 90s era, and at other times moments that pay homage to Björk's early work. Army of Love. But we can't just rely on those references and think that's all we know about this album. There's a sensibility stemming from 80s synthwave and the experimentation of contemporary Japanese techno. A recording like Dead souls, It can be described as a small roller coaster of unexpected emotions, made in the manner of an artifact of sweet suffering, ready to squeeze every last drop of pleasure and suffering that may remain in our skin. Biting a spectrum It is a growing dance, which can be performed against a wall or by systematically bumping into other bodies on the dance floor,Wailin Wood It is the apparent calm before the inevitable storm, the air that promises to break with everything in its path.
There's no future It is a work of vehement beauty, which gives no pause or rest to the listener who faces it. It is the result of distance, of experimenting outside the comfort zone, distanced from the original home, Forging new paths in uncharted territory, Deer proves that the world is vast and, at the same time, ever smaller. From the other side of the world, this Mexican couple has once again surprised us.
