We have said it on several occasions: We are huge fans of the digital music platform Bandcamp. It is one of the fairest companies in the art market, with a clear philosophy that states that to the extent that the musicians who make their work available in that space obtain good results, Everyone will benefit appropriately. Anyone wanting to showcase their songs and albums on Bandcamp doesn't need intermediaries. Once they have all their material ready, they simply go to the website and, following the instructions, can offer their work to the world in just a few minutes. The platform earns a small commission on each sale. And it doesn't complicate anyone's life with unnecessary censorship, aggressive corporate speeches, or commercial harangues that convince no one. You're unlikely to see the multi-platinum albums of pop superstars just anywhere, but we assure you that if you take the time to explore this extensive catalog, You will discover magical, absurd, bizarre, terribly horrible, or simply fantastic things., done independently and, in most cases, with the pure spirit of reaching a few with honest work.
The first Friday of every month, since March 2020, Bandcamp is waiving its share of revenue to support the many artists whose livelihoods were impacted by the pandemic. On each of those special dates, fans paid artists and record labels $1,405,600, helping to cover rent, mortgages, groceries, medicine, and much more. According to the company's calculations, nearly 800,000 fans participated worldwide. This August 6th we return to the same ritual and we want, in our own way, to help spread this spirit of collaboration.
Bandcamp, in a humorous but direct way, points out that during the rest of the year, those who have purchased independent products on their platform in any way have helped to grow self-managed talent. On Bandcamp Fridays, an average of 93% of your money goes to the artist/label (after payment processor fees). When you make a purchase on any other day of the month (as 2.5 million have done since March, buying an additional $ 190 million worth of music and merchandise), an average of 82% goes to the artist/label. So if you can't place your orders now, you can still enjoy the indie side of music on any other day.
We have put together a quick list, with their respective covers, of available albums from most Latin American countries, ready to be downloaded. The complete catalog contains thousands of titles and the sound it contains is always available to be listened to. (One last note: Nobody paid us for this article. We don't know the people behind Bandcamp. But we really like their message and that's why we're sharing it with our entire audience.).
