You, followers of this section that reviews new releases made through Bandcamp, The most interesting platform in the digital world, they know that Our job here is to look for surprising, unexpected novelties. And since curiosity is what guides us, we come across this strange and wonderful album, made in Buenos Aires, with African folk sounds, jazz, candombe, elements of classical Arabic music, and a touch of seventies funk and other spices that add a very particular flavor to the final result. Little can be found about this project on social media., Except that this is their third publication, and that they are preparing a book that compiles all the stories told in their songs. It's a complete mystery, especially since this album isn't available on other platforms. But, living in the information basement, we wholeheartedly recommend this release, because It is a happy mosaic of fusions and mixtures made to pamper the ear. Our favorite track? Fifth cut, Tiger Eyes, a kind of psychedelic ballad with a female voice, singing a short lyric:
Oh oh, tiger steps!
servile villager
Oh, oh, tiger steps!
I see you coming.
Hopefully, one day we will learn more about them.
Kombilesa Mi – Asina Gué
The history of San Basilio de Palenque is glorious. Founded by fugitive African slaves, It was the first people in the Americas to free themselves from the submission and subjugation of the colonizers. At the beginning of the 17th century, they resisted oppression, and for this reason, this village still represents that to this day. African emancipation from servitude in America. That's where Kombilesa Mí comes from, a group formed in 2011, which makes a vibrant combination of traditional music and urban rap, with lyrics in both Palenke and Spanish. His music is related to local rhythms such as Mapalé, Bullerengue and the Son Palenquero. This two-song EP, barely over four and a half minutes long, was released a few days ago. Its sound and lyrics perfectly encapsulate the feeling surrounding this important moment in Colombian history. Respectful yet bold, this band's offering is a thrilling expression of ancestral instruments and vocals. that speak of their culture, yesterday, today and always.
Afrika Korps – In the Labyrinth
From Chachapoyas, a small city located in the highlands of the Amazonas department, in Peru, This curious musical proposal arrives, which labels its sound as "post-cumbia". Belonging to the local label Soma Records, This band creates an intense fusion between psychedelic rock and jungle cumbia, in which, for added novelty, he adds dark reverberations to the vocal work that seem to be taken from gothic metal productions and industrial music. Yes, all this sounds quite exotic and unusual, but the final mix is appealing and, at times, generates more questions than answers, which may further pique the listeners' attention. They are intense songs, with thick textures, which might frighten some members of our audience, but for the sake of intrigue, it's worth giving it a chance. And if you're in the mood for a trip stoner, play the final cut, The Bad Race, a hypnotic recording of more than thirteen minutes, a possible piece for an extensive trance experience.
