I must say (and admit) that a large part of the punk that has been produced in Bogotá in the last twenty years does not meet my expectations, because in many cases it sadly exposed its musical limitations, and its plaintive lyrics were unattractive. I think that the idea of punk, on the planet in general, when it was able to progress, He displayed his fierce desire to evolve, broke his own sonic patterns, and was able to adopt enough audacity and humor to ensure that his protests, which the world so desperately needs today, sought to go beyond resentment.. For this reason, I welcome the publication of Incendiary visions, the band's second album Figueroa, a project of raw textures and fresh ideas, which raise the level of the musical genre.
Is this punk? Of course it's punk and it still respects the garage music tradition. Incendiary visions It's a collection of dirty recordings, lo-fi, homemade and self-managed. It shows. Don't expect any groundbreaking productions here. But that's not a problem here. Not at all. The band, on the contrary, takes advantage of its limitations and turns them into its own trademark, embracing them with the interest of discovering what it can do with the tools it possesses. This allows them to blend what they know with the curiosity and freedom essential to having their own identity. Therefore, they cannot be easily categorized., and even less so when we listen to songs like Solar storm (the keyboards that occasionally intervened reminded me of the great festive moments of the sadly defunct British band) Carter the Unstoppable machine) either Matatigres (a tune with bizarre love lyrics that sails the streets of Bogota, to which trumpets are added to add drama) which manages to elevate the result to an undeniable underground hit for a city that is thirsty for new urban anthems).
Figueroa, let's not exaggerate, is not splitting the history of punk in two, But their new album arrives just in time to alleviate a decline in the local rock scene., which is divided, with honorable exceptions, between those who seek the favor of the mainstream media and the organizers of mainstream festivals, losing touch with what's happening in front of their house, And those who, with spite and resentment, fear breaking with their tribe, a circle that does not forgive renewals in its ways, by repeatedly labeling innovators as traitors and sellouts.
