The Barrelshots – I'm coming home
Don't be fooled by their image. Anyone, seeing their photos, would expect the traditional ska sound from this Ecuadorian quartet in their songs. And yes, that's where its roots come from and surely its resonant original intentions, but what is presented in this EP is more open in its results. This work, with two very interesting recordings, navigates in its first part, with the help of singer Lady Lex, through a kind of nostalgic calypso reminiscent of the 1960s. In its second section, it's a haunting instrumental piece that combines, perhaps accidentally or consciously, something with an exquisite Caribbean origin and an aroma closer to dark British trip-hop. There's a brilliant selection of timbres on the keyboard, and something in their presentation of the tracks happily sets them apart, leading us to believe that if these musicians, based in Quito, continue down this path, they will attract considerable attention from fans of good music. We'll be keeping an eye on them.
Max Ruano – Hanging from the faucets
Are you looking for beautiful albums that can restore your hope in the world and everything around you for a few minutes, or at least allow you to have a great time with simple music made to lift your spirits without a care in the world? Perhaps this is the album you've been longing to hear. The truth is, what this Uruguayan artist offers us is a compilation of five songs crafted with delicacy and good taste that, without certainly intending to uplift the masses, With its sensitivity, good humor, and catchy melodies, it can fascinate anyone who hears it. This work contains elements from pop, jazz, rock, and folk, all amalgamated to create perfect themes to inspire a smile that heals any spiritual discomfort.
Door handles – XXIII
It's been quite a while since we've kept an eye on this trio from the city of La Plata. We'd lost track of them, and now, fortunately, we've rediscovered them with the release of this analog-recorded album, where they continue to explore an admirable intensity and sonic weight with artistic and intellectual rigor. Many of the recordings presented on this album exceed eight minutes (there is one track that resonates for one thousand one hundred and thirty-six seconds) And they're arranged in almost symphonic formats. Having said all that, this is an album not meant to satisfy the listener with the sporadic thrill of a composition that immediately hits the nail on the head, but rather to entertain them with the presentation of layer upon layer of thunderous sounds that establish a dark, fascinating, and not-so-easy odyssey. Get ready, fasten your seatbelts, and let yourself be carried away. It will be a good experience, we guarantee it.
