Editor's note: With this first set of succinct reviews, we open a new section called Under Recordings. Here we will talk about works recently published on the platform Bandcamp, specializing in alternative record labels, with sounds often far removed from the commercial sphere. Our idea is to publish interesting pieces from the Latin American underground, created with an adventurous spirit and, in general, with a happily contradictory spirit to what is proposed in mainstream circles.
Puppies in the Sun – CChristmas lullaby
This Peruvian duo based in Barcelona has taken advantage of the Christmas season to release an interesting musical satire and pass it off as a Christmas carol for promotional purposes. Obviously, their production is quite far removed from the saccharine festival essence of the season. All this seems to contain the desire to convert innocent bunnies into the sect of good noise. In two recordings totaling eight minutes and forty-two seconds, Alberto Cendra and Cristobal Pereira, using an acoustic drum kit, keyboards, and other electronic machines, create an intense, aggressive, and fascinating instrumental atmosphere, surely designed to suddenly break any routine of good social behavior and everyday pusillanimity.
Iridescent – Iridescent
It seems the new generation of great Chilean rock is ready to fight its own battle and prove that the fire is still burning brightly in the country's music scene. This trio has released a three-song EP of finely crafted, raw sound and strong lyrics that deserves the attention of fans of stoner rock and psychedelic influences. In his tunes there is a pleasant mixture of acidic tenderness and sensitive corrosion that convinces from beginning to end. A great start for a band we expect will have much to say and show in the coming years. In the meantime, we remember their words:
«"Who will be the one keeping vigil?"
and in your place left a mark,
to end my journey in this place"»
Bird – Bird
What this duo of women based in Buenos Aires creates is tastefully crafted acoustic art with a pleasant desire for experimentation, seeking to renew the traditional structures of Southern Cone folk music. The work of Sonia Kovalivker and Luz Fasanelli Natal draws from many roots, ranging from candombe, chamamé, blues, French chanson, a touch of milonga, and, why not say it, a certain rock flavor. This album is fun, exciting, captivating, full of surprising moments and definitely exquisite. It's clear: This is music to celebrate our smiles on the face of the earth.
