Some time ago we read some statements by the Chilean artist Gepe where he affirmed that the contemporary Latin American musical spectrum had nothing to envy from the talent of the first world. It was with this spirit of firmly believing in what has been done on this continent that Zonagirante.com was born 19 years ago, right around this time. Since then, we've seen this scene grow, more specifically alongside self-managed musicians. In each of the major cities of the hemisphere, a constantly evolving scene has been cultivated, assimilating and adapting the latest sounds to make them their own, and learning to expand their art internationally. Of course, with the arrival of digital platforms like Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, and others in our countries, what was practically impossible a decade ago—making local independent music available anywhere in the world whenever anyone wanted—is now an everyday occurrence. That's why we included these proposals in our list of the best of last year., like the Colombian Lianna, the Argentinians The Spirits, or the Peruvians Alejandro and María Laura,Among so many other examples, they have managed to expand their recordings (and their personal presence) to various stages around the world. We have seen how, in recent times, the most prestigious festivals on the planet have included some of our favorite artists in their lineups, such as Bomba Estéreo , He killed a motorcycle police officer o I Want Club, We've followed these artists since the beginning of their careers, and we're thrilled to see them now being recognized by the world's most prestigious media outlets. Yes, the Latin American music scene has grown, and we're proud to have been a part of it since 1999.
We are closing out the year and have decided to publish what, in our opinion, These are the 18 best Latin American songs of 2018. Eleven of them were created by women. We are convinced that female ingenuity is the main force for renewal that will save the continent's musical art. Therefore, our list is headed by Fran Straube, creator of the musical project Blond, We feel that the vanguard (that overused word, but so useful right now to describe the moment) is on their side; they are the ones who can surprise us the most. Alongside them, we have a pleasant surprise from Ecuador called The Tower, who describes his sound as "Orchestral Electro Pop." We at Zonagirante.com suspect we've heard his track To be eternal We've listened to her dozens of times and discovered captivating details in each audition. We must also mention one girl who has impressed us both in her recordings and in the opportunities we've had to see her live. We're talking about the Colombian artist. Mabiland. Her sound is a fresh blend of soul, funk, and hip hop. We're looking at an artist who, without exaggeration, we hope will soon be touring the world, much to the delight of her future fans.
Within our playlist We recorded a sample of the progress of the Peruvian scene. This time we're including two examples of what's happening in electronic music in its capital, Lima. On the one hand, an old friend of ours, José Gallo, and his project Theremyn 4, released his album Lost Moments, including his song Burning Streets of Sound, And the truth is, we feel this is the best work of his career, as he has managed to recapture the spirit of new wave in his own way and effectively adapt it to modern times. We also celebrate the work of Blue Velvet, a couple supported by the record label Buh Records, which, through fascinatingly dark compositions, has managed to attract the attention of specialized commentators from around the world.
On the rock side, we'll be focusing on two groups. From Colombia we have... I'm not a robot. This quartet, made up of artists from well-known groups such as Superlithium, Silver Revolver, M.Perinee and Six Pedestrians, Quietly but surely, she has been disseminating her acid-tinged sonic intentions with compelling and powerful recordings. Meanwhile, from Guadalajara, Mexico, though spending most of the year in the United States, Teri Gender Bender and her band Le Butcherettes. In 2018, Teri has been dedicated to releasing impressive individual songs that are shaping her sound. which we are sure will be one of the best albums of next year. Each publication has been a cause for celebration, not only for us, but also for a growing fanbase established in North America and Europe.
Okay, enough talk, let's get to the good music. Here's the list of songs selected by Zonagirante.com to showcase what we consider the best of 2018.
