Upon arriving at the office this morning, we found the resignation letter of one of the editors of the international section. He left the handwritten note at reception, under a bottle of whiskey and some flowers. At first we thought it was a joke, but one of his colleagues confirmed the news and warned that at the time we were reading his words, he was probably traveling on a bus to a remote farm, almost deep in the jungle. He broke up with his partner, someone more informed clarified. Having established the facts, we began to read:
«"To whom it may concern:
Good love songs should leave a mark on the hearts of those who listen to them. They should transcend time and almost repeat from generation to generation the same feeling of desolate beauty, so that at least one phrase of the lyrics is etched in our memory, and so that, even in the most inopportune moments, we can use them to connect with that feeling that has been ingrained in our blood since the first time we heard them. Of course, love songs are more useful for describing desires and disappointments, because most happy love songs are a big lie or, at least, unbearably corny. I have too many scars covering my ribs to put up with scammers spouting phrases like
I've known you since your hair
Right down to the tips of my toes
I know you snore at night
And that you sleep upside down
I know you say you're twenty
When you're twenty-three
or nonsense like
Kiss my mouth, with your tear of laughter
Kiss the moon and cover the sun with your thumb
Kiss the space between my body and your silhouette
And I will kiss the deepest sea with your moisture
Too many adjectives, too many absurd metaphors, too much mental poison. There's enough evidence of human stupidity already, without having to blast this nonsense at full volume. I'm taking a break from humanity to reconnect with good recordings and will return in a few months, maybe years., as if nothing had happened.
Perhaps it's time to lock myself away in the undergrowth and stay there until the large reserves of batteries I carry in my Walkman run out, until the homemade cassettes explode, while I listen to tunes that remind me of lines like
If I reach your heart, the same
Everything will always be available to choose.
Don't write on the wall
I just want to be between your skin
And what if the sun didn't shine?
And I'd be trapped here.
I wouldn't see the reason.
"To continue living without your love.".
Anyway, after finishing reading the letter and drying our tears, we had no choice but to finish off the contents of the whiskey bottle and laugh for a while, when we realized that the unfortunate man was traveling with old analog tapes in the middle of the wetlands. It won't make much noise under those conditions.
