Twenty years ago I turned on the television early in the morning, playing grown-up, like someone who looks for news while choosing the tie of the day and checking traffic conditions on their way to work. That day there was unanimity among the experts, announcing that it was not going to rain in the city, that, in the worst case, there would be some reckless clouds covering the brightness of the sun for a few minutes., But walks through the city center shouldn't be interrupted by the folly of using umbrellas. That day, I think, they premiered a commercial for one of those cars that always impress, an all-terrain vehicle, the kind that climbs a rock without any problem or crosses a wide puddle effortlessly. Surely the comment I made as soon as such a display of mechanical power ended was an ironic one., in which he stated that such a tremendous machine would be a boring cabin in the middle of the capital's traffic.

The program continued, and while I sat, coffee in hand, like any grown man who plays at being the owner of the world in the early hours while he finishes getting dressed, everything was interrupted. A tower. Immediate questions in the chat, What happened? Did you see it crash? Is this really happening? The image of hundreds of incredulous people staring in utter shock at a burning building. It was surely an accident, but how absurd is this? No, no, no. The other tower. The neighbor, who doesn't have a television in his house, rings the doorbell and enters immediately; he couldn't believe what he was hearing on the radio. And, without meaning to, I sank into the sofa, not caring that a little coffee spilled on my shirt when I sat down. The maturity I was boasting about a few minutes ago has turned into fear. I don't want to move from here. I don't understand anything, nothing at all. My neighbor falls into the same state of shock and sits down next to me. The most powerful moment is seeing a bunch of men and women covered in a foul-smelling gray dust that surely smelled like the worst of deathly misfortunes walking across the bridge, trying to get home, completely defeated. Those zombie drills certainly didn't make us recover easily. My neighbor and I couldn't get off the couch for hours. Thus began the present century for all of us.
