Today, upon arriving at the office, We found the boss with the main sound system blasting old Primal Scream songs, More precisely, those from the first edition of his favorite album, Screamadelica. He, who hadn't been in a good mood lately, was dancing with his clumsy but amusing way of moving., knowing that his is an irremediable combination of the ridiculous and the exciting. He raised his hand and suddenly A few waiters came in to distribute chocolate cake with walnuts, Romeo y Julieta cigars, and Glenlivet whisky among the employees., like the one Mariana Moyano fervently recommends in her podcast Anaconda with memory. We all looked like we knew we'd forgotten something. The past week hadn't been easy; a couple of important interviews fell through., A sort of Latin George Soros had promised significant financial aid and then vanished off the map. And on the other hand, we heard the occasional physical complaint from the boss that left us worried. While we ate, smoked, and drank, guilt clouding our memories, the boss stood on the central table, raised his glass, and began to recite. From his mouth came, initially in the original language, and then correctly translated, one of the two "english poems" written by Jorge Luis Borges. When the Spanish version began, a tear fell down her cheek, but she didn't bother to wipe it away. Instead, she lifted her face and said:
«"What could I use to keep you?"
I offer you slender streets, desperate sunsets, the moon of poorly cut suburbs.
I offer you the bitterness of a man who has gazed long at the lonely moon.
I offer you my ancestors, my dead, the ghosts that the living have honored with bronze: my father's father who died on the Buenos Aires border with two bullets that pierced his lungs, bearded and dead, whom his soldiers shrouded with a cowhide; that great-grandfather, from the maternal line, who commanded, at twenty-four years old, an offensive of three hundred men in Peru, now only ghosts on faded mounts.
I offer you, whatever it may be, the wisdom contained in my books, and the manliness and humor contained in my life.
I offer you the loyalty of a man who has never been loyal.
I offer you the hard core of myself that I have somehow kept; the central heart that does not trade in words, does not traffic in dreams, and is not touched by time, pleasure, or adversity.
I offer you the memory of a yellow rose seen at sunset some years before you were born.
I offer you explanations about yourself, theories about yourself, authentic and surprising news about yourself.
I can give you my loneliness, my darkness, the hunger of my heart; I try to bribe you with uncertainty, with danger, with defeat.".
When he finished, he went back to his office, but not before asking that, at the end of the day, all the mess from the celebration be cleaned up and that nobody bother him until Monday. Only then did we remember it was his birthday.
