I know the phrase "music is cyclical" may sound very cliché. And it probably is. But that doesn't make it any less of an indisputable truth, especially in the times we live in., when you believe that you cannot create something truly authentic. The last decade was a kind of revival of New Wave and Post-Punk, which saw the mainstream emergence of bands like The Killers and Franz Ferdinand. Delving into the sounds coming from the heart of Latin America, I've noticed that, curiously, the same phenomenon is occurring, but now with the alternative sounds that emerged in the late eighties and early nineties. Perhaps this is because those of us who are making music these days grew up listening to and watching everything that invaded MTV (when it was a music channel, not one of stupid reality shows and reggaeton).

An example of what has been written is the Chilean band Subsocial, founded in 2010, and which presents its second LP, called Houdini, in which sounds from different origins of the musical spectrum are amalgamated, but in which They highlight the characteristic psychedelia of Stoner Rock and the furious speed of Grunge (Yes, yes… I know my previous post was about a grunge band, but how can I not like it?).

They are nine quite enjoyable songs. These are the gifts from our friends in Santiago del Estero. From the powerful instrumental M for sadomasochistic, passing through the atmospheric Anthropophagy, the punk Promises of yesterday, the reflective (with hints of Reggae), until closing with the most Stoner Houdini y Evil, Subsocial takes us on a journey through a a production true to the desert and psychedelic spirit foundational of the subgenre they represent.

We can rest easy, then, knowing that the Dessert Sessions (foundational milestone for bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss and Fu Manchu) They have left a legacy that continues to live on the world stage. Its essence has been captured by Subsocial and, quite sincerely, I hope they continue to develop it because, as we say around here: THEY'RE KILLING IT!
