Speaking of Holy Week, Bogotá, during these holidays, until a couple of decades ago, was a hell of boredom. Holy Thursday and Good Friday were days of tedium and forced reflection for those who stayed in the capital, as everything, everything, everything was closed. Or, well, almost all: Obviously all the churches opened their doors wide and, moreover, at inappropriate hours, to increase the unjust punishment, They held processions through the streets of the neighborhoods, with the priest at the front reciting the appropriate homily, distorting all his words through the megaphone at full volume. In those days, movie theaters, in order to receive the public in their facilities, replaced their program and showed old copies of films like The Martyr of Golgotha, The Life of Jesus y The Passion According to Christ. The same thing was happening on television. In addition, inevitably, there were heavy rains and, on some dramatic occasions, some hail. Bogotá was a city in a ridiculous state of mourning, and the blame fell on all citizens. The best option (that's how dire the situation was) was to escape to the hot, lowland resorts and get drunk on all sorts of anise-flavored liquors. In short, the urge to slit their wrists with the issued plastic knives grew stronger with each passing hour.
Today? Holy Week continues to drag on, it continues to rain at inappropriate times, But cinemas have already replaced the messiahs of the Bible with superheroes who want to prevent the end of the world. The street processions are becoming less crowded, and every two years around this time the Ibero-American Theatre Festival is held, which gives the city a more vibrant atmosphere. We don't have concerts on Holy Thursday or Good Friday, and the parties are private; we're never invited. We subscribe to Netflix and Spotify, and yet boredom and the urge to complain during these days remain a deeply rooted Bogota custom.
