March has always been an inspiring month, both in sounds and images. It is supposed to be the end of the southern summer and the departure of the northern cold. It's the anticipation of spring's arrival in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumnal spirit in charming cities like Buenos Aires and Montevideo. It's supposed to be the start of kisses for those eager to begin a new life and hugs for those who have managed to survive the summer heatwave. Those of us who have always lived in the tropics simply let ourselves be guided by the unpredictable nature of the weather in a region without seasons. Still, March is different and we should enjoy it.
As part of the celebrations for this 31-day period, we started reminiscing about classic tunes that have marked our lives. Now we remember, with its lyrics, an old song by Nito Mestre, published in 1977:
I've been talking to you since the days of March
When I silently discover my fears
I only blame myself for feeling desires.
To prove myself without being able to do it
When I shut myself away in my solitude
All those things I would have to shout
I must say that it's not easy to know
How to listen and then respond
It's simpler to just drop words
Random words with no meaning
Sometimes silence is more
A thousand notes together without any love.
Cover your eyes
The light will somehow come.
Use other senses
Sometimes it's good to remember that
